Choosing your language

How the site picks a language when you arrive, and how to switch to another one.

This guide describes how this demonstration site works.

Five languages

The site is available in English, Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish, French, and German. Every page has the same address in each language, apart from the language code at its start: en, pt-br, es, fr, or de.

Brand names and the sample companies, people, and IDs stay the same in every language. Amounts stay in US dollars; only the way numbers and dates are written changes.

Example: the language menu, open, with the five languages each written in its own language and the current one checked.

How the site chooses a language

An address that includes a language code always opens in that language, so a shared link looks the same for everyone. For an address without one, the site chooses in this order:

  1. Your saved choice. If you’ve chosen a language on this site before, the page opens in it.

  2. Your browser’s languages. Otherwise, the site takes the first of your browser’s preferred languages that it offers. Regional variants count too: Portuguese from Portugal opens the Brazilian Portuguese site, and Mexican Spanish opens the Spanish one.

  3. English. If none of your browser’s languages is offered, the page opens in English.

The language suggestion

If you open a page in one language while your browser prefers another that the site offers, and you haven’t chosen a language yet, a short notice appears at the bottom of the screen, or at the end of the page when the window is very short. It’s written in your browser’s language and offers the same page in it.

Either answer is saved, so the notice doesn’t ask again. Pressing Esc on one of its buttons declines it, too. It never takes focus, and the page keeps room for it, so it doesn’t hide the end of the page.

Change the language

  1. Select the language button in the header. It shows the current language, such as English. On small screens, open the menu first.

  2. Choose a language. The same page opens in it.

  3. Your choice is saved for the next time you open an address without a language code.

The languages are also listed at the bottom of the site’s pages and of the product demo’s pages, under Language. These links work without JavaScript too, but your choice is only saved when JavaScript is on.

What’s saved

Your choice is kept in a single cookie that this site sets, named NEXT_LOCALE. It holds only the language code, such as fr, and lasts a year. It’s set only when you choose a language or answer the suggestion.

To forget your choice, delete this site’s cookies in your browser. The site then goes back to your browser’s languages.

About this site lists the cookie’s details, along with what else this demonstration site does and doesn’t do.
